The sunset gradient is a soothing packaging design used to catch the eye of consumers. With their bright colors and beautiful ombrés, they naturally draw people in with their warm presence. The sunset gradient packaging style consists of two main factors:
- An all-encompassing gradient that covers the entire packaging
- Monotone, minimalistic elements
You can easily recreate your own sunset gradient by following the steps below or watching our tutorial on how we transformed our standard packaging design with the sunset gradient trend.
Step 1: Choose your gradient colors
Begin by picking the colors we want for the gradient. You can use any colors for this. However, if you would like to get some inspiration, you could browse at color palettes online. Check out this site for some gradient inspiration.

Step 2: Create a gradient background
Once you have your colors ready, open your dieline in Adobe Illustrator, create a rectangle for the background color of your packaging, and fill it using a gradient. From here, you will be able to choose from a linear gradient, radial gradient or area gradient. Pick your desired gradient and add the color codes for the colors you previously selected. Using the sliders, you can change the appearance of the gradients or add more colors to your gradient, ultimately finding what you feel is best.

Step 3: Add your packaging elements
Finally, add your branding elements on top. Typically, you would want to choose a monochrome color. This will allow the gradient to do most of the talking and such that the packaging isn’t overwhelmed with too much going on. Try to choose a color that will stand out against your gradient design. Play with placement, fonts, and sizes of your elements, taking advantage of negative space. You can even consider embossed elements or die-cut elements for something a little more unique.
